Founders

David Chickey is a book designer and curator with over 20 years experience in the art business. A graduate of UNC, Chapel Hill and Sussex University, his experience includes work with both the museum and the gallery world — including the St Louis Center for Contemporary Art, the Allene Lapides Gallery, and Sotheby’s, London. He is currently co-owner of Skolkin+Chickey which provides a full range of design and packaging services to artists, museums, and publishers. Clients have included Hudson Hills Press, Clarkson Potter, SITE Santa Fe, Magnum Photography, the Amon Carter Museum, and many others. He is the former board chair of the Center for Contemporary Arts in Santa Fe, NM.

Darius Himes was the founding editor of photo-eye Booklist, a quarterly magazine devoted to photography books, from 2002-2007. Himes is also a lecturer, consultant, educator and writer, having contributed to Blind Spot, Bookforum, BOMB, PDN, and American Photo. He earned his BFA in Photography from Arizona State University and a Master of Arts in Liberal Arts from St. John’s College and actively pursues his own photographic imagemaking. Himes also serves on the board of Center, formerly The Santa Fe Center for Photography.

Joanna Hurley has thirty years experience in book publishing. Although her specialty is marketing, she was trained initially as an editor at Thomas Y. Crowell/Harper & Row, and is knowledgeable about all aspects of the business. She is currently president of HurleyMedia LLC, which provides publicity and marketing services to publishers, authors, photographers, and arts organizations. Prior to starting HurleyMedia in 1994, she was marketing director of the University of New Mexico Press, and director of publicity at Vintage Books, a division of Knopf. Joanna has worked on a variety of books throughout her career, including intellectual non-fiction, literary fiction, and business titles. In addition, she has worked on over fifty photography books, on artists such as Irving Penn, Dorothea Lange, Van Deren Coke, Eliot Porter, Bernard Plossu, Richard Misrach, Mark Klett, and many others. She is the president of the board of Center, formerly The Santa Fe Center for Photography.

David Skolkin is an award-winning book designer and co-owner of Skolkin+Chickey, whose career began in New York City working in the studio of one of the top book designers in the publishing industry. While in New York he designed and art directed book and exhibition projects for most of the major art book publishers as well as museums and art institutions in New York and around the country. He has received much recognition during his 20 year career including multiple awards from the AIGA (50 books/ 50 covers competition), American Association of Museums Publishing competition (over 10 including two first place awards in the last three years), Publishers Association of the West (over 12 in the last 10 years), and a prestigious Infinity award for best photographic book of the year (International Center for Photography).
