“On Max Cole” by Charlotte Jackson at CCA

Join Charlotte Jackson Fine Art Executive Director and owner Charlotte Jackson for a discussion on contemporary artist Max Cole. Jackson, who has exhibited the category-defying, New Mexico-based artist's work for decades, will share insight into Cole's process and practice.

Max Cole, b. 1937, was born in Kansas and grew up in the Southwest. She earned her bachelor’s degree in 1961 from Fort Hays University in Kansas, and three years later received a master’s degree from the University of Arizona in Tucson, where she was awarded a Fellowship for the Graduate Study of Painting. Since then, Cole has refined her visual language into a series of vertical and horizontal lines, and a restrained palette of gray, black and white. Her works often comprise up to 80 layers of paint and areas of unpainted linen, subtly interchanging the texture of paint with the texture of fabric. Further looking reveals tiny, imperfect, hatch marks that oscillate when seen from afar. Cole’s works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others.

Charlotte Jackson established Charlotte Jackson Fine Art in 1989. Since then, the gallery has become known for its clearly defined and highly respected program that affords collectors the chance to see a wide variety of color-oriented painting, and sculpture. The gallery specializes in Monochrome painting, Light and Space and California Modernists.
