David Maisel: View from the Precipice (Survey of Works 1983-2026) (PRE-ORDER)

Known for his aerial photographs chronicling the complex relationships between natural systems and human intervention, David Maisel's images often initially appear abstract and painterly, offering detailed but open-ended visual information that operates as both documentary and metaphor. Their strange beauty has been referred to as “the apocalyptic sublime.”

View from the Precipice, a retrospective monograph spanning Maisel's entire career, begins with a comprehensive index of his projects from 1983 to 2026 that includes both extensive information about each body of work and insights into their development in the artist's own words. This chronology is followed by a lyrically sequenced plate section that draws formal and conceptual connections across bodies of work, decades of time, and photography and painting—the two mediums in which Maisel most commonly works. In addition to writing by the artist, View from the Precipice also includes newly commissioned essays by Alexander Nemerov and Geoff Manaugh alongside a transcribed conversation between Maisel and author Samantha Harvey that focuses on, among other things, the visual and psychological perspective afforded by the aerial vantage point.

  • David Maisel is an artist working in photography, painting, and video. His disquieting aerial photographs and large-scaled abstract paintings consider the aesthetics and environmental politics of open-pit mines, clear-cut forests, water reclamation, and rampant urbanization, and climate-change events such as drought and wildfire.

    Maisel is the recipient of a 2018 Guggenheim Fellowship in the Creative Arts, which enabled his Desolation Desert project in Chile’s Atacama Desert. He was a Scholar in Residence at the Getty Research Institute in 2007 and an Artist in Residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts in 2008. He is a recipient of an Individual Artist’s Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and was short-listed for the inaugural Prix Pictet Award in Photography. Maisel received his BA from Princeton University and his MFA from California College of the Arts, in addition to study at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design.

    Maisel’s work has been exhibited internationally and is included in more than fifty permanent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, among many others. His work has been the subject of symposia at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design (David Maisel: Black Maps) in 2016, and at the New York Institute for the Humanities (David Maisel: Library of Dust) in 2009.
