Laurie Lambrecht: Texere (PRE-ORDER)

from $60.00

Laurie Lambrecht’s observations of her natural surroundings—the tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields, and freshwater marshes of the Long Island Sound she calls home—come to form through both eye and hand in her lens- and fiber-based works. In her recent series Bark/Cloth, for example, images of tree bark are printed on linen that is then embroidered with colored thread. Each work is unique, its patterns and textures heightened by the combination of materials and Lambrecht’s detailed handwork first put to use during her time as a sweater designer. The finished objects, which can look like topographical maps or aerial views of Earth’s varied terrain, become quiet meditations on time, the shifting scales of nature, and the ways in which humans interact with, render, and alter the natural world. Texere, the title of this first monograph to focus on Lambrecht's interdisciplinary practice, is Latin for "to weave or intertwine" and is the etymological root of "texture," "textile," and "text"—three elements at the core of this lyrical and immersive volume.
